ERATOS as a case study with The Consulting Society at EPFL
Annual competition · Strategy work in teams
Context
At the invitation of The Consulting Society at EPFL, ERATOS took part in the association’s annual competition. According to the company’s public post, student teams spent three days examining a growth question: how should ERATOS position itself in territorial regulatory intelligence in Europe?
The case
The case focused on the company’s strategy and expansion ambitions. At its heart was a product question: how to turn spatial and regulatory information into a tool that professionals would adopt in their work.
The competition connected product development with the question of adoption. A product may process complex data, but reaching its market also requires a clear view of its users, the decisions it helps them make and the evidence needed to earn their trust.
The question behind the work
What makes territorial intelligence infrastructure reusable across different settings? Geographic coverage alone is not enough. Sources, their hierarchy, revisions and rules of interpretation vary. A useful architecture must accommodate those differences while preserving a clear method for justifying its conclusions.
For compute infrastructure, this becomes a concrete requirement: a land assessment, an energy requirement and an interconnection procedure must describe the same scenario. The system’s value lies in organizing these dependencies and identifying what still needs confirmation.
The ERATOS case raises a question about scale: how can a product expand without losing sight of the specific problem it solves? This page records the strategic challenge given to the teams and offers this interpretation of the work, without attributing particular recommendations to the participants.
